Who is it for?

MyParkinson’s is for:

  • Anyone already living with Parkinson’s, whether this has been briefly or a long time
  • Anyone who was just diagnosed with Parkinson’s, and
  • Anyone who was given a diagnosis of Parkinsonism instead of Parkinson's.

We have noticed over the years though that some people with Parkinson's feel that they are 'too good' to be seen early and wish to 'wait' until Parkinson's affects them more. At the same time there are people who do not move well and they feel they are 'not good enough' to be seen and have all but given up.

In both cases however, they are wrong.

We really do want to see you as soon as possible after your diagnosis. Just think of all the time and frustration you can save yourself, avoiding the mindless internet searches, scrolling through often less evidence based Facebook pages, listening to other people's well meant opinions who have friends/neighbours/family members with Parkinson's and suggestions on what you should do. Imagine trying to become an expert in the field of Parkinson's that has thousands and thousands of research studies, in order to find out what you need to do differently; only to find that you are not able to find that overall plan on how to manage Parkinson's. That is why you come to us. We help you become an expert in your field and we help you to make that plan to start managing Parkinson's the right way from the start.

In contrast, there are other people who feel they are not moving well enough and often give up, saying they should have searched out help long time ago and it is too late now to make a difference. Even though this may feel like a truth to you; you are most likely not doing yourself any favours.

Every day you can make a new choice to start living well with Parkinson's; to address the issues that worsen Parkinson's, to work on the things that are going to reduce some of your symptoms and help you move better and live better. It is never too late to come to us and start fresh.

If you live in Far North Queensland, you can see Joyce at her clinic in Freshwater, Cairns QLD 4870. If you do not live locally, or are unable to drive to Freshwater, you can also see Joyce through her virtual clinic via Telehealth. It does not matter where you live in Australia; you can have access to specialist  physiotherapy Parkinson's care via MyParkinson's.

What can you expect when you come to MyParkinson's?

When you see us, you can expect:

  • To be listened to. How does Parkinson’s affect you really in your daily life? What concerns you the most and which are the things you need help with? Which aspects of Parkinson’s do we need to spend more time on? Which questions would you like answered? What is important to you?
  • To get an objective baseline measurement of where you are at this point in time, from every aspect that we care about. Think of your medications, your physical status & movement, your diet, your sleep, your social health, pretty much all the elements that we know about that can help to get the most out of living with Parkinson’s.
  • To be helped out with things that don't go as well as you like them to be. Maybe your walking is not as good as you would like it to be. Perhaps you feel your balance is changing ever so slightly or you had a fall. You may have noticed getting out of a chair is not as easy as it once was, or perhaps you feel dizzy more often after you get up,  your sleep has changed or your fitness levels have started to reduce. All these things is where we come in to help you.
  • To get a plan of action. Are you where we would expect you to be, or can you be better than what you are now? This action plan contains all the elements we recommend you integrate into your life, in order take back control and be in the driver’s seat. In essence, our aim is to provide you with the missing pieces in your Parkinson’s puzzle.
  • To become part of a network of people specialising in Parkinson's. You are not alone in this. You need to surround yourself with people you trust and would like to work with, while you are managing your Parkinson's. Specifically for specialist physiotherapy at MyParkinson's, this means that we will liaise with your neurologist, GP or other specialists, your other physiotherapist, or with anyone else who is already in your network and link you in with people who should be in your network. We will create this network. It does not always have to be you sitting and waiting around until your next appointment with a specialist is due to address an issue that is important to you. We will organise and expedite these things for you and discuss any concerns within your network. Parkinson's, but made a little bit easier for you.
